About Nuera RDL

Nuera Research & Developmental Laboratories (Nuera RDL) is a multi-domain research lab based in Monte Vista, Colorado, in the heart of the San Luis Valley. We design new architectures where old ones have become the bottleneck. Then we build them, test them, and publish what the evidence shows.

We work across the physical, digital, and cognitive domains because the hardest problems don’t stay inside one field.

What we build

Physical systems. Project AMP (Advanced Manifold Platform) brings pressure, flow, and structure together in one manifold system. We’re starting with irrigation, because here in the San Luis Valley every drop of water counts. A U.S. patent application is in preparation.

Autonomous systems. We build AI systems that can act on their own and stay accountable. Quicksilver is a company operating system that turns a stated goal into governed action: every step is authorized, checked, and logged. Forkling is an open-source AI agent on a year-long run to improve itself, with every attempt, mistake, and fix published for anyone to inspect.

Cognitive & evaluation systems. We study how AI understands what people want, and whether it treats them well. Aura is our intent engine, which models what the people behind an automated system actually want. WAES is a family of six evaluation suites, now in design, for measuring whether AI models protect user wellbeing: whether a model is honest about uncertainty, respects people’s own decisions, and holds up under pressure and across updates.

Why it matters

  • Water is finite. In the San Luis Valley, aquifers are under stress and every acre-foot is metered. Irrigation that wastes less, and farms more of the field, matters to every grower here.
  • AI is starting to act for us. As AI systems take on real tasks, people need to be able to see what those systems did and why, and to stop them when needed.
  • AI affects how people feel and decide. Small failures, like false confidence, a nudge in one direction, or a dismissive tone, can hurt people. Those failures should be measured, not guessed at.
  • Rural communities deserve to build the future, not just receive it. Technology built here keeps its value here.

Our values

  • Architecture first. We start from the physics, logic, or computation, not from how it’s always been done.
  • Evidence over claims. We state what we expect, test it, and publish what we find, including when we’re wrong.
  • Rural relevance. We favor work that solves real problems for farms, infrastructure, and communities.
  • Open by default. Research, data, and tools are shared openly unless there is a real reason to protect them.
  • Built to be accountable. Anything we build that acts on its own must be auditable and must answer to people.

Our vision

A world-class research lab in a rural community. It should prove that original science and engineering can be done anywhere, and that the results can matter most to the places that made them.

Community impact

  • For growers: a pilot pathway for new irrigation technology designed around San Luis Valley crops: potatoes, alfalfa, dry beans, and small grains.
  • For the Valley: research, fabrication, and pilot work that happens here and stays here.
  • For the AI field: open datasets, evaluation tools, and methods that anyone can use to check AI systems.

Work with us

We’re looking for:

  • Pilot partners: farms and landowners interested in testing new irrigation technology.
  • Research collaborators: people working in agronomy, hydraulics, AI safety, or wellbeing science.
  • Funders and supporters who want rural research to lead.
