Structural-Fluidic Systems

Nuera RDL studies physical systems in which a single structure carries both load and fluid flow. Instead of treating the frame and the plumbing as separate parts, we design them as one element and test how it performs in the field.

Where this research is applied

Our flagship program in this area is Project AMP (Advanced Manifold Platform), which starts with irrigation in Colorado’s San Luis Valley. It targets three field problems: soil compaction, land lost to wheel tracks, and uneven water delivery.

Research questions

  • How structure and flow can share one element without compromising either
  • How to get even water distribution across a field
  • How to reduce the weight and ground pressure that equipment puts on soil
  • How prototypes hold up under real operating conditions, measured with repeatable tests

Approach

We combine first-principles engineering, simulation, prototyping, and field validation. The goal is a system whose performance can be measured, repeated, and improved, not a one-off demonstration.
